Methodology

Composite rank

How we combine the four passport indices into the headline rank you see on country pages.

How the headline rank works

Mobility is the headline — the other three indices are shown alongside it, each with their own rank. We don't collapse four measures into one number. A passport that's strong in one area and weak in another stays visible.

When two passports have the same mobility count, GDP reach and Heritage break the tie in different directions. We show both rather than picking one.

We chose transparency over simplicity. Four honest numbers beat one misleading average.

Data sources

  • Visa requirements — Government and public visa-requirements data, updated daily.
  • GDP — World Bank economic indicators per country.
  • Heritage — UNESCO World Heritage Centre site list.
  • Update frequency — Daily. Rankings change when source data changes.

Important to know

  • Visa policies change frequently. We update daily, but always check with the country's consulate before travelling.
  • Passport strength measures short-term travel access. Long-term residency and relocation rights work on entirely different rules.
