What it measures
Number of countries accessible without a pre-arranged visa — including visa-free entry, visa on arrival, e-visas, and electronic travel authorisations (ETAs).
A higher number means more of the world is open to you for short trips. For example, a Japanese passport opens 193 destinations — the most in the world. This is the same approach used by the Henley Passport Index.
Why it matters
The simplest, most widely recognised measure of passport strength. Easy to compare across passports, and immediately useful if you're planning travel.
What it doesn't capture
- Every country counts equally. A tiny island nation and a major economy each add one point.
- Ignores how hard the entry process is. A quick online ETA and a six-week consulate application are treated the same. For that distinction, see Friction access.

See it in action
Every country page shows the mobility score alongside the other three passport indices. You can compare any two countries side by side.
